Marrying neatly to the field tradition of steeplechasing — a sport bom from the foxhunting field in 18th century Ireland — the annual North American Field Hunter Championships will be held Oct. 1-7, culminating in the championship finals held before the Virginia Fall Races Oct. 7.
Mounted fbxhunters from around the nation will converge on Middleburg’s Glenwood Park for the finals, scheduled before a full racecard later that day. Finalists are selected from each of five hunting days with northern Virginia packs; judges hunt alongside competitors to choose the best, most athletic, most mannerly field hunters.
Finalists (typically numbering 20 to 40) take part in a mock hunt around the Glenwood Park course before judges choose a final group (usually of eight to 10) to compete over a handy huntei course designed by judges tc test the horses’ training and suitability.
Trophies are awarded foi overall champion and reserve best turned out, “most suit able,” and, if appropriate “Champion of (past Champions.”
