English trainer Gary Brown will bring seven horses to Virginia to race over timber in the U.S. this fall season. Arriving today, Sept. 12, two of the horses are expected to begin their campaign at Shawan Downs in Maryland, one each in the maiden timber and featured open timber stakes; Brown then expects to race every consecutive weekend until Nov. 18.
Brown’s home base is in the tiny village of Kintbury just south of Lambourn in Berkshire County’s steeplechase training center an hour west of London,
Brown’s owners, Emma Whetton and Lucy Homer, are both horsewomen themselves. Homer will ride her own horses, five-time winner Your A Gass man, Music To My Ears and Navaya. Area horsemen may remember the petite blond winning at Morven Park in 2006 on Make It Easy, with then-trainer Dai Williams.
Welshman Williams, based in Lambourn, laid the groundwork for Brown’s foray into American timber racing. Williams brought over two timber horses at a time three times in the past decade; his successes have included a winner at the International Gold Cup meet, and one at Morven Park last fall. All of Williams’ horses were for sale, as are Brown’s.
In addition to Homer’s three, Brown is bringing Profowens, Olival, Four Schools and Fair Dual. All are between 5 and 9 years old.
