lowing a year's recuperation after suffering a ruptured spleen and pancreas during a fall at Utozeter. He met Horner when she began galloping horses for him about a year ago.
“All of these horses were bought intentionally to race over timber in America,” Brown said. “They will obviously start as maidens and progress from there, and then it’s just a matter of how well they take to timber.
“My owners Lucy Horner and Emma Whetton are both keen to give it a go, and hopefully well have some winners in Virginia. English races usually are faster-paced, so if these horses can win over the bigger English courses, such as Aintree, Haydock and Wetherby, Fm confident they can negotiate American timber fences. They have all schooled well over my own timber fences in Kintbury.”
James Davies and Seamus Durack are schooling the team over the timber fences at home, and Davies will travel out on a couple of weekends to race-ride.
Brown made a reconnaissance trip to the area this past spring, on Horner’s strong recommendation. Said Horner, “I knew that Gary would be interested in taking up the challenge of American timber racing.” Brown said that he found the Virginia courses all straightforward and fair, and he is looking forward to testing his horses over them.
The Brown racing team will be based in Middleburg at Beth Glenn’s Melrose Farm near the Middleburg Training Track.
