WASHINGTON— For the second consecutive week, the Panthers defense came up with crucial play after crucial play.
But unfortunately, the offense never could get on track and the Panthers came up a touchdown short for the second time in as many weeks, losing to the Hancock Panthers, 14-7 in the home-opener.
“Our defense kept us in it and gave us chance to win, but we really couldn’t capitalize on offense,” Coach Mike Williams said. “We’d obviously like to see a better outcome, but it’s great to see the hustle. Our kids never gave up and I'm proud of that.”
RCHS fell behind in the first quarter as Joey True scored on a three-yard touchdown run with 3:11 remaining in the opening quarter. Following a missed point-aftertouchdown, Hancock led 6-0.
After the two teams traded punts on their ensuing possessions, Rappahannock marched 77 yards on eight plays. Quarterback Johnathan Butler hooked up with wide receiver on four occasions during the drive, and the two finally connected on a 16-yard touchdown reception midway through the quarter to get the Panthers on the scoreboard. Hogan’s pointafter-touchdown gave the Panthers a 7-6 lead.
“Dean is my go-to guy. I look for him when we need a big play” Butler said. “I though Dean’s touchdown really gave us the momentum, but we lost it just before the half and we couldn’t recover.”
