“Ask me again next week after the results of the first meets come out in the newspapers and I’ll tell you who’s strong in the Bull Run District,” replied coach Ann Spieker when asked this week which teams she expects to provide the top track and field competition for the Panthers in 1984.
“I really have no idea. I expect Stonewall and Strasburg to be tough — as usual — but I won’t know until after the first meets of the season,” she said. “Last year’s district winner in the girls’ competition was Clarke County but the Eagles lost almost their entire team to graduation.”
Rappahannock likewise will be missing some winners from last year’s track contingent but Spieker is looking for new faces to fill in the gaps. “We have a lot of new kids out for track for the first time this year. They’re inexperienced but they’ve got talent. Right now, I have to find out what they want to do, what events they want to compete in. The first meet tomorrow (March 28) is going to help decide that question. And get them settled down, too.”
