Estabrook brought other figures to the board in accordance with a request from last week.
The superintendent had asked $8,000 to install a computer operation in the central office for accounting and payroll procedures. The terminal would connect with the IBM main firame at Piedmont Technical Center. Could the job be done with a less expensive unit? asked board members last week.
This week’s answer was “yes.” Estabrook reported $2,000 could be cut by purchasing the IBM-PC rather than the IBM-PCXT he had initially requested. The lower priced model has no hard disc features, but school officials could use these at Piedmont, Estabrook said. When an IBMPCXT could be bought later, the IBM-PC could be pulled Into one Of the schools fbr instructional purposes, Estabrook added.
He noted he had investigated prices of other brands and found that while the initial price might be lower, adapter units would be needed to connect to Piedmont.
The board voted to authorize the less expensive computer system and deducted $2,000 from the furniture and equipment item in the budget. This leaves a request of $18,000—$6,000 for the central office computer system and $6,000 for each school building to be used as the principal sees best.
