Our friend, Carl James, is a large part of the volunteer Rescue Squad in Amissville, Virginia. And the rescue squad is a large part of Carl's life. When the electronic pager sounds, Carl moves into action by rushing to the firehouse and on to those in trouble. It’s his job to be there in the thick of things. Managing the horrof and human suffering he encounters is not a job for the timid soul. Yet there are few rewards for such grueling and unselfish work. Adrenalin and devotion keep him going.

For Carl, many sleepless nights have begun with the shriek of the alarm and the instant apprehensive of what lies ahead for the rescue squad to tackle. He shakes himself awake in response to the call and reaches the waiting ambulance with his years of skill and experience in tow. The rest of us sleep on—unknowing.
