In line with national trends, at CMH outpatient surgery has increased significantly over the past year.
Opened in July 1981, the outpatient unit saw a 63% increase in patients in fiscal year 1983.
Sometimes known as "in and out" surgery, outpatient surgery means short, minor procedures that require a short visit m the hospital for the procedure and recovery. Patients stay in the outpatient unit a few hours following surgery and then go home.
Gynecologic and orthopedic surgery are the most frequent kinds of outpatient procedures at CMH, but ear surgery and other kinds of general surgery are common also. Many procedures are performed with a local anesthetic, further shortening recovery time in the hospital.
With outpatient surgery, you receive less medication and feel relaxed knowing you will go home quickly. Because of shortened stays, the outpatient situation is a major innovation in cutting hospital costs. In addition, CMH has reduced outpatient nursing unit charges by nearly 50%, and operating room charges for short, uncomplicated procedures by 25% or more.
