Gov. Chuck Robb's changing signals on the race for the Democratic presidential nomination spread confusion through the ranks of the faithful last week.
As the nominating process picked up steam in the fall, Robb and other top party officials lined up behind the ill-starred candidacy of Sen. John Glenn of Ohio. There were solid reasons for them doing so. Glenn, a political moderate, was more closely attuned to the political philosophy of the Old Dominion than any of the other nugor candidates.
If nothing else, the Glenn candidacy provided a reasonably safe haven for those Virginia Democrats who were seeking to avoid an overly dose association with former Vice President Walter Mondale and other more liberal presidential aspirants.
