All the riders kept close together for the first half of the race, united somewhat in their misery and self pity > at riding in the cold rain.
At about the halfway mark barely a length separated the riders as they came streaming across the stone wall almost as though on a hunt.
In the woods below the wall the field began to split up, however. Mike Brown’s Little And Bold threw a shoe and had to be pulled out after leading the race up to that point. Peter Weslow fell from his horse but remounted quickly, but with several lengths between him and the next rider, Dawn Dugan.
As the field approached the finish Ms Cunningham and Nelson Gunnell rode hell for leather for the line. They were neck and neck until close to the end. But the finish line was up a hill and Mac Sub proved the stronger of the two up the gradient, pulling in front of Tregaron by a length and a half to finish in 9:1$-% minutes.
“It couldn’t get much closer than that!” said Mr. Gunnell of Middleburg who was quite content with his position.
