IN 1964 MARCH roared to a {uadi
in the best lion fashion with snow and winds. April Fools Day was a real joke on Rappahannockers, reported the editor. County residents awoke on the last Monday of March to find six to eight inches of snow. Schools closed. That night, the temperature fell to 11 degrees.
Local leaders were invited to travel to Warrenton to attend a two hour session on why schools should offer a driver education program. More than 300 invitations to the meeting had been sent to official and civic leaden in a six county area. Planned by Virginians for Driver Education, the meeting was co-sponsored by area Farm Bureaus and Safety Councils.
Susan Jenkins of Sperryville was the winner in the annual apple pie baking contest at the high school. She was preparing to compete at the Apple Blossom Festival in Winchester. There she would also appear with other winnen in the parade.
In the Easter program at Sperryville School Bronson Jenkins and Steve Leake were ducks and Ronnie Foster a frog.
The editorial in the April 2, 1964 issue urged Rappahannock residents to warmly receive neighbors wearing American Cancer Society armbands. During the cancer crusade, each volunteer was distributing new brochures on early detection of the disease. “Better put on a smile and let him in,” the editor said, “It's a smile that could save your life.
