With those assurances, the planning commissioners voted unanimously to recommend approval of Burke’s variance application.
Training Tower
The planners also endorsed a request for a special use permit application for a four-story fire fighters’ training tower proposed to be built on the Amissville Fire Department grounds.
Hubert Gilkey, representing the county’s Fire and Rescue Association, explained that a $5,000 grant has been awarded by the state for the project. “We’re going to go as far as we can with that money right now,” he said, adding that blueprints for the construction had been borrowed to keep cost down.
The tower will be constructed of 12-inch dnderbiock to the third floor and flinch block on the fourth floor. It will have a door but no windows on the first floor with windows on three sides on the second, third and fourth floors, an inside stairway and an outside fire escape. The tower will be used in regional training programs to instruct emergency service volunteers on how to rescue people from two and three story buildings, Gilkey explained.
