Parents who read to, with and in front of their children promote lasting reading habits and skills, according to Lynn Hilleary-Myrtle, a fourth- grade teacher and certified reading specialist at Rappahannock Elementary School. Mrs. Myrtle says the example set by parents is fundamental to the priority children place on reading while they’re children and later in life.

December has been designated by Governor Charles S. Robb as “reading month” throughout the Commonwealth. This year’s theme is, “Virginians are reading...for literacy, leisure and lifelong learning.” A series of articles related to reading in Rappahannock public schools appears on this page and page 3.
