Insulation in double walls is only part of the house’s thermal qualities: Ten inches of pillowy fiberglass in the attic qualify this solar house for “a super insulated” classification, Batchelder notes. uIt could be the best insulated home in the county,” he adds.
Located on one-half acre at Rappahannock Lakes in Amissville, the house was built for resale. Construction began in 1982; the project was completed earlier this year.
The house has not sold, however. Batchelder attributes this to declining energy costs which he believes have slowed consumer interest in solar homes. The house is owned and listed on the market by Batchelder’s father, Roger Batchelder, a realtor in the Town of Washington.
The house combines active and passive solar systems. It also has electric baseboard heat as a backup, which is “seldom needed,” Batchelder says.
