Barrons home is a closed, hot-air system. Sunlight heats air inside the solar panel, which is located in the middle of the roof. When the heated air reaches a certain temperature, a fan located in the attic automatically turns on, pushing the solar-heated air downward.

The air flows through fourinch tubes that originate in the attic, run down through the wall, loop beneath the concrete-slab foundation, then return to the attic through the wall.

According to Pearl and Marshall, this inexpensive solar system keeps the entire floor warm. In addition, radiant heat rises from the floor to help warm the entire house. On the evening of this report, when outside temperatures were in the high 30s, the Barrons' home was 70 degrees inside with nothing other than the solar heat collected and distributed by the system.
