Order Tree Seedlings Now
For Spring Planting 1985
William C. Vernam, Area Forester with the Virginia Division of Forestry, reports that now is the time for landowners in Rappahannock County to order tree seedlings for planting in the spring of 1986. "Landowners should look at their properties now with the view to planting trees next spring” says Mr. Vernam.
Thirteen species of trees are being raised in Division of Forestry Nurseries for spring planting in 1985. Loblolly pine, white pine, shortleaf pine, Norway spruce, Scotch pine, black locust, bristly locust and black walnut are among the tree species available for Christmas tree, timber production and soil erosion control. Species suitable for wildlife include autumn olive, Virginia-70 shrub lespedeza and sawtooth oak. Prices range from $20 to $200 per thousand trees with approximately 700 to 800 trees needed to plant an acre of open land. Planting site recommendations are available upon request.
"Why should I plant tree seedlings?” is a question landowners often ask. Benefits include a future timber crop, increased land value, reduction of soil erosion and stream sedimentation problems, increased wildlife habitat and air pollution reduction. Potential planting sites include cutover land, abandoned fields and steep hilly land are potential planting sites.
