Earth Berm, Too
Adding greatly to the economics of the home is an envelope of insulation. "It’s a very well insulated house; that’s a big factor,” Marshall says.
The thermal envelope begins beneath the foundation with a vapor barrier of polyethylene topped by two inches of Styrofoam. The house also is insulated partially by its earth-berm design on the north side, an "ideal location because of the natural slope,” Marshall says.
