To the editor.
As a concerned citizen of Rappahannock County and a member of the CCRC, it concerns me greatly that some people think of ns as a group attempting to shunt the county’s landfill problems off on another district or area. This is not so. We (the CCRC) are trying to correct a gross mistake in the location of the proposed laixHlll.
More specifically, we are working—if possible with the cooperation of the Supervisors—to develop and apply a set of objective criteria for the selection of a suitable landfill site, one that will not endanger the health of residents and livestock alike. In particular,, criteria such as: Easy accessibility; low-density population and low real-eatate-aasessmeht values; the absence of marshes, streams, springs and ponds; rolling hills with some forest for a buffer.
In criteria such as these, along with input from the people, had been used in locating the present landfill in Woodville, it probably would not have been put there and we would not be faced with the task of finding a new site now.
We in this relatively new community of Peyton Farms Estates may be regarded by some as out-landers, but it may come as a surprise that we dearly love this county and consider this to be one of the most beautifiil spots in the country. It was this scenic beauty that brought us to this area for retirement, that led us to invest our life savings in homes here. It is this same beauty that prompts us to work to preserve this fragile element from contamination, destruction and pollution by a landfill that, by any reasonable standard, would not be located at the proposed Route 621 site—the Margolis tract.
