The proposed document is more specific with definitions that spell things out in black and white, rather than leave them grey for a zoning administrator to interpret. Moreover, inconsistencies have been weeded out, which can be credited to the public that constantly picked and pawed at them in the proposed document, especially during the August 15 public hearing.
Fifth: There is a time for trusting public servants, and for the planning commissioners, the time has arrived. They’ve worked on this proposed zoning ordinance for years. A few of the members know firsthand the history of Rappahannock zoning ordinances. They deserve some respect for their acquired wisdom and ability to persevere. Planning commissioners have been accused of everything from being too rich to too self-serving. Much of the criticism has been unfair, unfounded and unwarrantable. Believe it or not, these people love Rappahannock and want what’s best for this county, too.
On the other hand, the constructive criticism of individuals and groups has begun to show results. The planners listened during the last four months. There’s more ironing out to do, but at least the wrinkles have surfaced that need to be pressed. No doubt, the planners will incorporate much of what they heard.
They’ve heard enough; the Board of Supervisors comes next. It’s time we support the Planning Commission.
