We believe the time has come to support the Planning Commission in its quest to propose a new and better zoning ordinance for Rappahannock County. In many respects, the planning commissioners have gone beyond the call of duty.
First: The Planning Commission has responded to the outcry of nearly 40 citizens who spoke before some 400 attendees at an August 15 public hearing on the proposed zoning ordinance. The planning commissioners didn’t put blinders on and plow forward like a team of Clydesdales, as some citizens accused them of doing. Rather, they regrouped, recognized the need to solicit more public input and answer more questions, and set out to do just that.
Their task was accomplished via a series of community meetings by district, which ran between October 22 and December 11. During these meetings, residents’ suggestions and concerns were recorded and more questions were answered. The community meetings were lively and well-attended, ranging from a low of about 50 people in the Piedmont District to a high of more than 80 in Jackson District.
