Despite the final score in the varsity game, Coach Don Dawson was pleased with the way his team played. RCHS led the game at the beginning, but were down by five points at the half. "They had us 56-40 at the end of the third quarter, and the team never gave up,” Dawson said. “We cut the lead to three points at times, but we never were able to get over the hump and take the lead.”
Dawson said that the final score may have indicated a loss by 13 points, but that the way the team played “I’d say we only lost by three or four points.” Dawson said that he was pleased since the game was the team’s first, and it was played against a bigger Blue Ridge team that had already played four games.
“We had inconsistency on offense like throwing the ball away, and mentally we didn’t play well during the second half,” Dawson said. “Some of the team members hadn’t played together before, so it will all come.”
Four Rappahannock players were in double figures for the night. Tommy Jenkins had 21 points, Jeff Porter had 12, Pat Brown had 11 and Mike Atkins had 10.
