Teaching, Too
Hie position of librarian includes quite a bit of teaching, too. It’s another aspect of the job Mrs. Kilby says she enjoys.
On an informal level, Mrs. Kilby begins teaching students library research skills in the third grade, when they learn to use the card catalogue. She teaches them the “whys” of the library system, too: Why the DeweyDecimal System is used and why it's important for beginners to understand this system of classifying books, j i The best teaching device, however, is example, Mrs. Kilby notes. She believes it’s imperative that children see their parents, their teachers- and their librarian - read.
She sets the example at the end of : every library period when reading time is set aside for each student. They're reading and I read also. I try not to be busy doing something else. I try to read with them,” Mrs. Kilby says.
Her job as librarian includes a host of other responsibilities, among them: selection of books, classification of print and non-print materials, budgeting, working with administration and faculty. The school is very supportive of almost everything we try to do,” Mrs. Kilby offers.
And so are the students, who all establish a personal rapport with Mrs. Kilby. When they’re in the library, they’re her children. "My children all come to me during the course of the week. Everyone in the school comes in . here,” she notes.
