The fifth and final "community” meeting December 11 on the proposed zoning ordinance became a questionand-answer session which at one point led to attendees’ dropping discussion for 10 minutes to review proposed zoning maps. About 50 residents attended the meeting, which was held in Piedmont District at the SperryviUe Fire Hall.
In opening the meeting, planning consultant Richard McNear alluded to floodplains passing through the middle of SperryviUe, making it what McNear called, "a unique town in a unique county.”
McNear said the Planning Commission worked to draft an ordinance that would help SperryviUe to grow as a town. He said a “highway commercial” zone had been created on both sides of Route 211 from the SperryviUe Emporium to the park. "The zone is designed spedficaUy for those kinds of things catering to the traveling public,” he said.
McNear discussed the Village Commercial area proposed for SperryviUe, an area proposed to run from the "old Johnston Store” past the Corner Stare by "four or five” properties on both sides of Route 522. He said the Village Commercial designation also would include a short section of Route 1008, proposed to begin at its intersection near the old blacksmith’s shop and end approximately paraUel to the four or five properties on Route 522.
