Landfills collect leachate, which is the liquid material formed when water leaches through the landfill debris, and dissolves solid wastes or picks up other liquid materials present in the waste. Leachate is generally considered to be noxious, and it is this material that has contaminated ground and surface water in malfunctioning landfills. The CCRC has contended that a landfill located at the proposed site would pose a severe danger to the Rush and Covington Rivers, and to more than 26 private wells, which they say are downslope from the site.
“The fault’s north-south direction runs directly from the Covington to the Rush River,” said Reynolds, “and we have been informed that due to the impervious nature of the bedrock below the site and the fault, the leachate will wick right back up to the fault and the fault will act just like a drain pipe.”
