Home ‘Experimental’
Mr. Batchelder calls the Barron home “experimental.” It’s the second house Mr. Batchelder has built that combines active and passive solar systems. “The whole design is basically economical and efficient. We really try to keep it as simple as possible,” Mr. Batchelder says.
An “active” solar system means that the system needs an external source of energy for heat distribution. In the Barrons’ home, this is accomplished by an electric fan. A passive solar system doesn’t require any external source of energy to gather and distribute heat.
