In her presentation to the board, Bloss reported the teacher turnover rate in Rappahannock to be 15 to 40 percent. The way to keep teachers in the county, she said, was to “make us feel justly compensated for the work we do.”
In further support of her position that Rappahannock's teachers are paid too little, Bio; cited various averages for teachers salaries: 1) $22,029 throughout, the nation 2) $19,867 in Virginia 3) $15,815 in Mississippi (the lowest state average), and 4) $15,509 in Rappahannock County.
Bloss also Reported that in Virginia over a given period of time personal income rose 154 percent, cost of living 124 percent, and salaries 100 percent. In the same time, Rappahannock’s salaries rose 69 percent.
Bloss urged the suervisors to examine the “deeper meaning” behind the numbers in the school budget. She referred to the impact of education on children and to the importance for teachers to maintain an adequate standard of living.
“Retaining quality teachers is essential to good education,” Bloss said. “There are excellent teachers here who want to stay....(but) we want to feel there’s a future for us here.”
