Anadromous does not mean a fish can remain in freshwater, but as some of the Atlantic coastal rivers became encumbered by dams, it was discovered that some spawning stripers had been trapped above the dams and were landlocked. They survived and spawned; they adapted.
Fish and wildlife biologists studied the potential for fantastic new fisheries in existing lakes and reservoirs.
Fingerlings were stocked into a few select reservoirs — it worked, and how! More and more lakes and reservoirs were stocked up and down the East Coast. Each became instant, smashing successes. More stocking programs developed further inland, even into the Rocky Mountains and the Great Lakes with more success.
An outstanding success story of a remarkably adaptable fish was brought about by some forward thinking and hard working fish and wildlife folks.
