His willingness to sign on with Terry will be taken as a clear signal by many wavering conservatives that Terry, while perhaps not ideal from their perspective, is an entirely acceptable candidate. The move will deliver both voters and money to the Terry camp. At the same time it will deny these resources to her opponent.
In spite of all this, Terry still has a difficult path ahead going into the November election. O’Brien will be an aggressive campaigner, and there is little doubt that the state will be flooded with negative advertising attacking her as “a liberal woman candidate” as the election nears.
But in the meantime Terry is quietly touring the Commonwealth, meeting with the voters and the powerbrokers as the campaign building process goes on.
What she is building has been described as a quiet steamroller, a durable vehicle designed to take her to the attorney general’s office in 1985, but available for further service four years down the road when, lest we forget, there will be another campaign for governor.
Because, after all, if she wins the attorney general’s office this year, the fact that Virginia has never had a woman governor is bound to be an intriguing thought to a person like Mary Sue Terry.
