Down from Pennsylvania, Mrs. P. F. N. Fanning’s Freeman’s Hill will also be making an attempt at the new Gold Cup. This 7-year-old son of Mystic II won the Maryland Grand National in 1984 but fell in this year’s race which was his last start. William Meister will be riding Freeman’s Hill who is a full brother to the ’84 Maryland Hunt Cup winner, Bewley’s Hill.
From The Plains, just up the road from Great Meadow, George Ohrstrom’s Tobiano is also listed for the classic 4-mile timber race. Clydetta Poe rode this 7-year-old Green Dancer gelding to victory in his last start, a maiden timber race at the My Lady’s Manor meet in Monkton, Md., and is listed to ride him in Saturday’s race.
Hamid, winner of the 1983 Middleburg Hunt Cup and second in this year’s Grand National, is also entered. This 9-year-old is owned by Irvin S. Naylor of York, Pa., and is trained by Hall of Fame trainer, D. M. “Mikey” Smith wick. Kathee Rengert will be riding.
