Reenactment At
New Market
The New Market Battlefield Park recently announced that 1267 participants from 17 states had registered for the 18th annual reenactment, of the Battle of New Market set for Sunday, May 12. Of the total, 512 are Union and 745 Confederate.
Park Director Robert S. Myers said 12,000 or more spectators are expected for what he called the largest Civil War reenactment in the country held on the original battle site.
Reenactment action is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
Myers said more people every year come in the morning, bringing picnic lunches, so they can visit the authentic camp sites, observe the troops drilling and visit the museum. And he urged that visitors be in the park no later than 1 p.m. to avoid traffic congestion.
There is no admission charge to the reenactment, but a parking fee of $2 will be assessed each car. Admission is chart* (adults, $2.50; 7-13, 75 cents) to the non-profit Hall of Valor which has exhibits on all the major Civil War campaigns in Virginia and films on the war in the Shenandoah Valley.
