“A short unit on what hydraulics is and how fluids transmit energy was completed using plastic syringes and aquarium tubing,” Vickers said. “Currently, the students have disassembled a small gasoline engine and are learning how the parts work together to change the heat of combustion into rotary motion.”
In wood technology classes, Currie has students spend a half of the year working on hand tool lathe projects with the other half spent on machine projects. Exploring technology includes units on woods, metals, graphics, manufacturing, plastics and electricity.
The manufacturing unit taught students about factory procedure with assembly line techniques and standardized parts when they made candle holders as a class project. “One student would be the foreman, and he or she would organize the workers and be in charge of the operation during that class,” Currie said.
The candle holders were made out of cherry and walnut frames with glass sides. The class is also learning about marketing a product once it is made by selling the candle holders for $15 or $25 for two. Orders may be placed by calling the school at 987-8575.
