Take-home projects were also made by the students and included a torpedo level, concrete gutter runner, sawhorse and nailbox. “The last six weeks will be spent installing dry wall and techniques in painting,” Vickers said.
In the energy and power class, Vickers taught his students about the various ways man has utilized energy and power in different forms. “The year began with wind power and students making wind-powered vehicles out of popsiele sticks in addition to models of various windmills,” Vickers said. “Historical development of man’s inventions of machines followed with a field trip to the Smithsonian.”
Next came a study of rocketry when the students were able to make and launch model rockets. “Solar energy was explored with group projects including an Oven, water heater, water purifier and furnace all powered by the sun,” Vickers said.
Each student made a working motor to learn about electrical power with group work on kits for a buzzer, electromagnet, dry cells and bell. A magnet maker, thermostat and transformer were also made by stu
