Something funny happened out there at the fence and the good ol’ umpire saw it. The ball actually had bounced over the fence. So Brown was credited with a ground rule double and Porter was ordered back to third. Two runs were deleted, one was allowed, and the inning was far from over.
Next, Smith walked to load the bases. Two batters later, Mike Atkins hit safely to right, which scored Porter from third. Then H.B. Wood knocked in another run by hitting a sacrifice grounder. It was unbelievable. Rappahannock was piling up the runs against the mighty Manassas Park Cougars.
Jimmy Fincham walked with the Panthers leading 4 - 3. Rappahannock’s next batter struckout but not before a wild pitch allowed Smith to score from third. Score yet another run for the home team.
The Panthers were blowing them out! After being clubbed silly in the first inning, Rappahannock turned right around and did the same thing to Manassas Park. What joy. Panthers 5, Cougars 3.
After the Cougars answered with one run in the fourth inning, Coach Dawson sent in Porter to relieve Smith. Porter pitched safely through the rest of the inning.
