The Bounty Of Virginia

The WE HAVE IT MADE IN VIRGINIA campaign is a statewide public service campaign created for the purpose of informing Virginians about the quality products made, manufactured, processed or assembled in Virginia. In addition, this campaign was created to acknowledge and thank the many existing industries that provide so many jobs for Virginians. The mechanics of this program was to identify Virginia products at the retail level with point-of-purchase materials provided by the WE HAVE IT MADE IN VIRGINIA office to coincide with consumer education handled locally on the quality, multitude and variety of these products.

The sale of Virginia food items increased after identification with the program from 15-600 percent and continues to rise, says Lisa Lafoon, Marketing Specialist with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Servies. Many people are unaware of the quality agricultural products produced or processed in Virginia that can be bought by the average consumer at various locations. These agriculture products are promoted and marketed by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services as well as commodity commissions and related associations. Some of the major industries represented consist of apple, beef, com, egg, peanut, honey, poultry, pork, vegetable, sweet potato, dairy, seafood, Christmas tree, soybean, wine, bright flue-cured tobacco and dark fire-cured tobacco. In addition, many other industries are promoted with total numbers reaching approximately 30. Work is constantly being done on the education, promotion and research of these products to increase their sales, visibility and availability in Virginia. The WE HAVE IT MADE IN VIRIGNIA program has definitely aroused interest in the purchasing and marketing of Virginia agricultural products. There seems to be an onslaught of entrepreneurs exploring new ways to sell these products.

Virginia Agricultural was the first viable industry dating back to the 1600’s in Jamestown, Virginia. Even though agriculture continues as Virginia’s largest industry, with the new inspirations of state pride, it is well on its way to receiving the maximum exposure it deserves.
