Great Meadow, near The Plains, and close to capacity crowds are expected based on the sale of advance tickets.

The day’s feature race, the $15,000 Virginia Gold Cup, has attracted a field of 12 including two former winners, the 1982 winner Prince Saran and the 1983 winner Private Gary.

Pony races will begin the day of racing at 12:30 p.m. and will be followed by a skydiving exhibition before the first of seven jump races, scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.

Juggernaut II, the 1981 Gold Cup winner, will be given a retirement gallop over the new course before the Gold Cup which is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.

General admission to the races is $7 in advance or $10 on race day and allows a car with 6 people admission to the course. For more information call (703)347-2612 or 253-5001.

A public hearing on the design and location of the widening of Route 17 will be held May 14 at 7:30 p.m. at Warrenton Junior High School.

Eleven homes will be tom down or moved because to make way for the $11 million construction set to start next summer.
