Ninety percent of the budget is planned for growth and modernization projects, including installation of 45 electronic switching systems (ESSs) and 250 miles of lightguide cable throughout the state. All but two of the ESSs will be digital systems.
The rest of C&P’s budget will be spent on the replacement of obsolete or worn out equipment and facilities.
Because they transmit signals in extremely fast, precise pulses of light, digital ESSs easily can handle complex high speed data. This makes them particularly attractive to business customers who send and receive large volumes of computer data.
The same high technology of digital ESSs that now benefits business customers soon wrill bring advanced communications services to'Tfesidential customers such as electronic message, banking and shopping services.
