He referred to his tenure on the school board when salaries were raised 12, 14, and 16 percent accompanied by a “56 percent'’ tax hike in two years. He also cited declining enrollment since 1978 as being responsible for a revenue loss of $466,000. He noted that the teacher-student ratio is more favorable today than in 1978-79.
Lane cited two ways in which teachers’ salaries could be raised; either through 1) “radical tax hikes”, or 2) by decreasing costs. Lane preferred the latter option, arguing that “we need to shrink our overhead” to raise salaries for teachers. He suggested that reductions be made in the present number of employees (130) in the county’s school system.
