Lane called upon School Superintendent Robert Estabrook to determine how “we can do better with less.”
Minutes later, Estabrook answered Lane: “I know of no way whatever to cut staff and be a responsible administrator.” Estabrook corrected a point implicit in Lane’s argument, namely that declining enrollment justifies employee cuts. The superintendent pointed out that if the second grade were minus 26 students, then one second grade teacher could justifiably be cut. But since the loss of students is spread throughout the grades, a teacher cannot be cut, Estabrook implied.
He said the community should feel an obligation to be competitive, and not only with respect to teachers’ salaries. “We have to make our children more competitive.” We do that, he said, by spending more, not less.
