A single followed, leaving runners
at first and third. When the guy at first tried to steal second, the Panthers committed their first error, sending in another run. Score 2 zip. Panther pitcher Greg Smith walked the next batter and then gave up a sacrifice fly, which scored the third run for the inning. Smith pitched out of the inning, preventing further damage. But Manassas Park was threatening to turn the game into a onesided farce.
The Panthers stepped up to the plate. After lead off batter Jeff Porter grouned out, Rob Brown reached second on an error. A few pitches later, Brown took off for third in an attempted steal. The throw from the Cougar’s star catcher Rick Slawson trickled into the outfield, leaving Brown to sail home. After one inning, the score didn’t sound so bad: 3-1.
