population to grow large enough to produce the stress factors. During that time, the gypsy moth can defoliate acres of forest and devour virtually any type of green vegetation.

“We want to establish the virus in a small population so we don’t have to wait for a large population to build up,” Vemam said. After applying the virus, foresters will periodically monitor the test plots to see if the virus has remained in the area. It is hoped that the virus, when applied early, will remain in a gypsy moth population and act as a continual check on it.

The virus, technically know as Nucleo Polyhedrosis Virus, afflicts the gypsy moth in its larva (caterpillar) stage. The development of the larva extends roughly from the end of April to the end of June.

Vemam said foresters this summer will examine dead larva taken from the test area to try to isolate the cause of death. Foresters will be looking to see if the cause of death can be traced to the virus. If the virus controls gypsy moth populations for several years, the experiment will be judged a success.
