Prince Saran, the 1982 Gold Cup winner and Timber Horse of the Year last year, heads a list of 12 entered for the 60th running of the Virginia Gold Cup Saturday at Great Meadow.
A record number of entries has been made for Great Meadow’s first Gold Cup meet which is expected to play to a capacity crowd.
When entries closed Monday evening at the National Steeplechase and Hunt Association (NSHA) offices in New York a total of 170 horses had been entered in the Gold Cup races.
Gold Cup officials decided not to split any of the seven races Saturday and many of the entries had to rely on the luck of the draw to race at Great Meadow.
All of the contenders for the $15,000 Virginia Gold Cup will be allowed to go, however, should they want to.
Tennesseean John R. Neal will be trying to reclaim the Gold Cup with his 11-year-old Prince Saran who was narrowly edged out of the title last year when Dr. Joseph M. Rogers’ Constantine caught him at the finish line in one of the most exciting Gojd Cups in memory.
Dr. Rogers will be back in the paddock again with his Private Gary who won the 1983 Gold Cup and was third last year. Last year’s winning Gold Cup jockey, “Speedy” Smithwick Jr. will be riding Private Gary who last started, and won, in the Eustis Cup at Oatlands.
