Northern Virginia Bypass
Supporters say it is a road that will be needed to ease intolerable traffic on the Capital Beltway. It could cut through Loudoun County and have a great impact on growth here.
The road has been dubbed the Northern Virginia Bypass, a kind of outer Beltway that would more than likely cut through Loudoun County, bringing traffic around Washington and through the less-developed suburbs.
Although only a concept now, it is planned as 80-miles of six-lane interstate highway that could cost $770 million. State highway Commissioner Harold C. King says the highway will be necessary to handle traffic growth in Northern Virginia and suggested the idea in a recent letter to the state’s Congressional delegation.
“We need it right now,” said state highway commissioner Joseph Guiffre, who represents the Northern Virginia Highway District, which includes Loudoun. “Yes, it would be a great help to Northern Virginia.”
One of Guiffre’s colleagues on the commission, T. Eugene Smith, an atlarge urban member from McLean, is pushing the bypass idea, primarily because of the 130,000 vehicles a day that now use the Capital Beltway.
