gars came to bat in the top of the fifth. Things once again began to look bleak for Rappahannock. The Cougar lead off batter singled and minutes later was advanced to second on walk. Then a successful bunt sent runners to second and third. Disaster struck when, with two outs, a Cougar drilled in two runs with a long fly to left, giving the lead back to Manassas Park 6-5.
All of Rappahannock collectively sighed and wondered if the Panthers could produce one more miracle. Sure enough, that very inning, the hometown boys struck back with lightening. Mike Atkins led off with a single, followed by H.B. Wood’s ground rule double to right field. With one out and" runners on second and third, Richy Dodson hit a sacrifice bunt that scored Atkins from third. Tie ball game.
Reggie Williams came to bat with the go-ahead run on third. With two outs the suspense was unbearable. Not for long though, because Williams drilled a grounder up the middle that sent H.B. Wood home. Rappahannock had recaptured its lead and even added an additional run when Porter’s double knocked Williams in from second. Score 8-6 Panthers.
Manassas Park inched back with a run in the sixth, leaving them within striking distance. The Panthers’ bats were quiet that inning, so the final showdown arrived. Manassas Park had one last turn at bat in which to retake the lead.
