Minquadale gelding was voted the Virginia Point-to-Point Horse of the Year and also helped his rider capture the Seven Comers owner-rider series with four victories during the spring season.
Baron Zantippy, another horse that ran on the local point-to-point circuit, will also be going to post. Jockey Peter Holloway of Manakin-Sabot rode this 9-year-old to victory in the Seven Comers race at Warrenton this year and will be trying for his first sanctioned win.
Rounding out the Gold Cup field, Mrs. Paul R. Fout of The Plains has entered Linberg, to be ridden by Mark Stickley, Jack S. Griswold of Glyndon, Md., has entered Tigre’s Houdini, Jay Meister riding, and Mrs. Douglas Vere Nicoll of Marlborough, Md., has entered Frog Prince, Don Yovanovich up. The latter horse has run once or twice on the Virginia point-to-point circuit under the name Classic Line and finished second in the Eustis Cup, but his registered thoroughbred name is Frog Prince.
To mark the Gold Cup’s new location this year’s contestants will be battling for a new trophy, the Jockey Club Challenge Trophy. John B. Coleman, owner of the Ritz-Carlton Hotels of Washington and New York and the Jockey Club restaurants, has donated the trophy. The new trophy, a 30-inch high gold-washed ewer dating to 1900, is the original trophy from the 1903 Aintree Grand National in England and is valued at $40,000.
