Wakefield eighth grader Aaron Barbour came in third in the region, and the Wakefield eighth grade team placed third in the region. Members of the eighth grade team included Aaron Barbour, Tobias Dengel, Robert Roberts, Michael King and Morgan Andraea.
National Merit High Scorers
Wakefield School is pleased to announce that eleven students in the junior class have been placed in the group of “high scorers” in the 1986 National Merit Program. The Selection Index scores - on the 1984 PSAT/NMSQT tests placed these students among the top 4.5 percent of the more than 1.1 million participants in the 1986 program which is sponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Approximately 30 percent of the top scorers across the country will be named semi-finalists in September 1985.
The commended students are Mary Beth Bayne of Warrenton, Duane Funk of Front Royal, Rae Marie Lutes of Warrenton, Elise Maar of Front Royal, Meera Maheswaran of Charlestown, West Virginia, William Meuse of Berryville, Lorraine Shea of Winchester, Lawrence Tarr of Warrenton and Tara Welty of Washington, Va.
The Merit Program, since its inception, has focused its resources on identifying, honoring and increasing public interest in academically able students and their schools. In 1986, the program expects to offer approxi mately 5,700 Merit Scholarships worth mpre than $20 million.
