Barney O'Meara of Sperryville praised the level of community involvement in schools. On a given Saturday, O'Meara noted as a positive sign the following activities taking place: 1) a variety show. 2) the SPTA playground project, 3) RAA soccer league practice, and 4) Little League tryouts. All of this, said O'Meara, is a sign of “momentum” and involvement. “People are working together, that’s a good sign.” He asked the board to do its part in keeping that momentum going by approving the proposed school budget.
Then School Board Chairman Beverly Massie thanked the supervisors for past funds and said she felt the proposed budget is realistic. “It’s 55 percent more than the budget last year,” she said, noting that without the capital outlay provision, the increase is 6 percent over last year. Citing the demands of modern technology and the need to retain teachers, Massie urged the board to approve the proposed budget.
