“Now, I’ve put the career on hold and I’m doing this full-time,”. she said.
Over the years, Ms. Slater has taken several classes in interior design, becoming certified.
“This is natural for me,” she said, adding that since the age of four she has been moving furniture and rearranging items.
“I can be in a room 10 or 15 minutes and have hundreds of ideas,” she said, adding interior design “brings out [my] creative ability.”
“I love color and design,” she said. Both are necessary for her job.
After looking at the room with the occupant, whether it’s office space or residential living quarters, she creates several sketches and floor plans for placement of furniture. She works in the person’s home or office to be decorated for light and space.
She said a showroom is nice for design but not practical, as items can look different in each seating.
“This way, when it’s finished it’s a sure thing,” she said.
Working on referrals, Ms. Slater said she basically has two programs—small group decoratings
workshops and private appoint-f ments.
