What school administrators are calling a “prank” left a Rappahannock High School student with multiple injuries last Thursday, and led to “severe” disciplinary action toward several others.
According to assistant superintendent Robert Chappel, "a situation that started out as a prank backfired,” leaving an 8th grade boy with bruised ribs, bruised muscles, a bruised liver and tom ligaments.
He said that what a group of students “definitely intended as a prank,” putting the boy into a trash container in a boys’ bathroom in the school, ended up with the boy hurt. Mr. Chappel said the victim missed two days of school, but was back in class Monday.
The other kids were punished, said Mr. Chappel. “Obviously we’re very, very concerned about it. We can’t be specific about the nature of the punishment, but you can be assured we’re treating it very, very seriously,” he said.
In police and court news this week:
• A 32-year-old Sperryville man was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after a single-vehicle accident that left him injured this week, according to Sgt. G.A. Morris of the State Police.
Gregory Smoot was operating a 1985 Plymouth on Route 600, a halfmile south of U.S. 211, at 9:05 p.m. April 4, said Sgt. Morris.
He ran off the right side and hit a tree. Trooper G.T. Settle placed charges.
Smoot was injured. The vehicle was destroyed in the wreck.
