Mr. Reynolds and Ms. O'Meara won the Eva Smith Memorials the following year, and Larry Forrester and Marti Nelson took the top overall for their respective gender categories. A sign of the race’s growing popularity: 213 entered.
The course record for men fell again in 1983, as Winchester’s Kevin Matthews crossed the Courthouse finish line in 32:45. Marti Nelson also broke the women's mark by more than three minutes.
Betty Settle sliced five minutes off the women’s Eva Smith standard, and the men’s Eva Smith winner was, again, Mr. Reynolds.
Yet another course record was set by Steve Pinard in 90-degree heat in 1984. Mr. Pinard smashed the former mark with a time of 32:20 in a race that brought out a record 369 entrants.
Mr. Pinard was back to defend his record the following April, setting another mark of 31:26 that stands to this day. Kim Belyea of Winchester took the women’s trophy with a time of 37:41. She holds the current record of 36:46.
Lisa G. Currie won the Eva Smith for women, and Mr. Reynolds was again the top men’s finisher. That year 275 people registered but only 225 ran as temperatures hit the high-80s.
