So they contacted Lyt Wood, whose Tree Works company advises landowners on tree care and forest management. He told them that Chris Bird might be available to log with draft horses. Mr. Wood marked 120 trees to be cut and several more that were not marketable to be culled for firewood.
Three weeks ago Mr. Bird and his partner Ray Lester, who lives near Banco in Madison County, started logging at the Toles property using horses. One day last week they were using Mr. Lester’s team of Belgian mares, Lucky and Bounce. Mr. Bird said he also has a team, and they designed a plan to switch off so the horses work one day and rest the next.
Besides the horses, they also brought along Mr. Bird’s portable sawmill. It was trailored behind a pickup truck. Mr. Bird said he had decided to saw up the logs before selling them. Sawmills are discounting oak from trees killed by gypsy moths because it is cut standing dead. “But they are superior for building materials because they are seasoned," he noted.
